The Black Hills National Forest calls them forest service roads, but some riders call them 82′ non-width restricted trails. Many of these forest service roads are trail-like!
These are the trails the wider machines can legally use. Some of these trails are open year-round. These are the trails that often take you into the mystery and history of the Black Hills.
There are over 3,000 miles of these forest service road, 82″ non-width restricted trail-like trails. These trails are numbered on the MVUM, with three digit numbers like 201 or 201 2A.
Close to Hill City. Drive into the old Hill City mining district. See a restored mine and numerous other evidence of mining history.
Trail 6830 is a Rock Crawler Trail. Trail and 669 has multiple water crossings.
The railroad went through here. Watch for evidence of Railroad history.
There are a number of historic gold mines in this area. Most require off-atv hiking. However, evidence of the mines are present at the site, making for great picture taking and visual enjoyment.

RALLY with us at the STURGIS OFFROAD RALLY.
The Civilian Conservation Corp was active in this area. An old 1935 CCC truck can be viewed. Other markers are available to read and buildings to visit.
Gold mines in the area include; Empire Mine, Gold Mountain Mine, Golden Slipper Mine, Tigerville Glory Holes and Joe Dollar Mine.
If you are willing to hike a distance, railroad evidence like Tunnel A or Tunnel B can be seen.
Peaks in the are include Samelias Peak and Mount Warner.
Watch for water features like Newton Lake, Marshall Gulch Pond, Gordon Gulch Pond, Gordon Gulch Creek, and Burnt Fork Lake.
Both 62″ trails and forest service roads are part of the Gold Mountain Ride.
Connecting rides include; Rochford Ride, Redfern Ride, and Tigerville Ride.
Parking is available at the Newton Fork Lake parking area.
