The Black Hills National Forest calls them forest service roads, but some riders call them 82′ non-width restricted trails. Many of these forest service roads are trail-like!
These are the trails the wider machines can legally use. Some of these trails are open year-round. These are the trails that often take you into the mystery and history of the Black Hills.
There are over 3,000 miles of these forest service road, 82″ non-width restricted trail-like trails. These trails are numbered on the MVUM, with three digit numbers like 201 or 201 2A.
The Castle Rock Ride is named after the 18th highest mountain in South Dakota and the 15210th highest mountain in the United States. Castle Rock is a 6,783 ft / 2,067 m mountain peak in the Black Hills in South Dakota. The Forest Service roads and trails in this area are traveled more by hunters than atv riders. But, it is a great ride and located close to Custer, South Dakota.

Buffalo Rock denotes where in South Dakota the last wild bison was killed. Castle Rock is an rock peak in this area. Another prominent peak in the area is the Twin Sisters peak.

Watch for historic Beryllium mines in this area. Mines include February Mica, Helen Beryle, Highview Prospect, and May Gold mine.
An old building to view is the historic Seven Mile School building. You will also see a loading chute structure at the Helen Beryl Mine.
There are no width restriction trails on the Castle Rock ride.
