The Battle Creek ride requires you to travel on & off, a highway. The traffic on this highway is not great, but the highway gives you access to old mines, old historic cabins, some great trails, and mining ghost towns. One old mining town has numerous old buildings. The old Soda Spar/Mt Lion mine was an old Feldspar mine.

AFTER A GREAT DAY OF RIDING, RELAX AT THE WHITETAIL CREEK RESORT CREEK-SIDE PAVILLION.

Trail 366 South provides some challenge and has numerous water crossings. Trail 674 is a hidden gem.

On Trail 366 North is a Public Shooting Range.

A great place to stay and ride straight to the trails,  is MYSTIC HILLS HIDEAWAY RESORT.

Trail 6501 is the only four digit trail in the area, but it is one of those four digit trails open to all width machines.

RALLY with us at the STURGIS OFFROAD RALLY.

Battle Creek is one of the major creeks flowing through the area. Another is Iron Creek. Battle Creek produces two water falls, the Big Falls and the Little Falls. Access these falls only after a long off-atv hike. If you are looking for waterfalls, a short hike will take you also to Spring Creek Flume Falls.

Numerous ghost town sites populate this area. Woodbine, Keystone, Bismuth, Spokane, and Glendale ghost towns each provide their own evidence of history.

If you like to explore old mining sites, there are many of these sites located off and on the trails in this area. White Cap King Mica mine, Rattlesnake mine, Holy Terror mine, Gilt Edge mine, Etta mine, Dike Lode mine, Soda Spar mine, Wealthy gold mine, Welcome gold mine and the Cuyahoga mine are some favorites.

The James Sheppard gravesite is one of the historical gravesite in the area. Harney cemetery and Mountain View cemetery are others.

Hiking to a destination like an old mine or a waterfall, is common in this area. Other hiking opportunities include the Iron Creek Trailhead, Stratobowl Rim Overlook trail, Battle Creek trail, and Toll Gate Creek Hiking trail.

Watch for evidence of old buildings like the Harney Ranger Station, the Spring Creek cabin, the blasting powder storage cave at Welcome, Rockervile buildings, the historic cabin at Glendale and a favorite, the buildings still standing at the Spokane Ghost Town site.

Everyone who rides in the area should visit Lakota Lake. Everyone visits the Mt Rushmore National Monument which is in this area.

You have to climb to see the only evidence of an old fire tower. The Boulder hill fire tower is no longer standing but the foundation is still there and so is the view.

There are no width restricted trails on the Battle Creek ride.

Connecting rides for Battle Creek ride are the Pine Grove Ride, and the Victoria Ride (see details below).

There are a number of places to park your trailer including the Pine Grove Trailhead (see details below).

Comments

  1. The Black Hills have great ATV trails and Forest Service roads. I have traveled most of them. Our forest service roads are either road-like or trail-like. On my Favorite Rides pages, I have highlighted the many TRAIL-LIKE Forest Service Roads.

I put this website together to help others enjoy their ATV visit to South Dakota. When I ATV out of my state, I realize how difficult it is to plan a three day ride without good information. I hope my website will be good information for you.

Over 1000 visitors a month use this website. Let us know what you think about Black Hills atving!

  2. When I click on one of the favorite rides, I see a list of places to visit, ghost towns, cabins, cemeteries, creeks. Are all those associated with the ride on which the page I clicked on? Are you trailering to trail heads or can a person camp and ride from campground to the trails?

    • Yes the “Destinations” (ghost towns, mines, campgrounds) are associated, and are located near or on that trail. In South Dakota you can ride your licensed ATV on gravel roads or highway from trail to trail. Enjoy our Black Hills trails!
