ATV riders who miss riding the Camp 5 area during their Black Hills vacation, miss a diverse ride filled with remnants’ of old gold mines and beautiful geological scenery. Trail 8041 will take you in and Trail 8042 will bring you out.
If you find Galena, take 170 East for some extreme trails.
Trails 180.1E and 180.1I take you to a hidden access to Elk Creek. Plan to have lunch at this spot and you will not be disappointed.
RALLY with us at the STURGIS OFFROAD RALLY.
*Camp 5 is the location of our most extreme trails. Trails 8042, 8043, 4045, 8046, 8049 are extreme. I have traveled all these trails on a 550 Sportsman. Depending on what machine you are driving you may be able to navigate them as well. Anyone renting a machine should avoid these trails because you are likely to be charged for damage when you return the unit.
The Galena Waterfall is a nice little surprise as you pass over Bear Butte Creek.
There is history to be seen at the Galena Cemetery on Vinegar Hill just outside of Galena.
A visit to Strawberry Hill Lake, West Strawberry Creek or even Reausaw Lake is worth your riding time.
Trails 8044 and 8047 navigate through the extreme area, but are very much passable. Care should be taken to not drift off these trails as they intersect in numerous locations with the extreme trails.
If the conditions are right, shortly after leaving the trailhead, you get your tires wet when you cross Boulder Creek water crossings.
Some of the mystery of the area includes the Camp 5 cave and the Camp 5 cabin.
The China Wall is an example of the mining history to be seen on the Camp 5 Ride.
Ghost towns include the Fort Meade Ghost Town, Rochmond Ghost Town, Reausaw Ghost Town and the Galena Ghost Town.
If the gate is open, spend some time riding in the Marcotte Game Production area.
Bear Butte State Park is worth a visit if your time allows.
There are no width restricted trails on the Camp 5 ride.
Connecting rides include: Stageyard, Custer Peak and Beaver Park.
A good place to park is the Camp 5 trailhead.

The Black Hills have great ATV trails and Forest Service roads. I have traveled most of them. Our forest service roads are either road-like or trail-like. On my Favorite Rides pages, I have highlighted the many TRAIL-LIKE Forest Service Roads.
I put this website together to help others enjoy their ATV visit to South Dakota. When I ATV out of my state, I realize how difficult it is to plan a three day ride without good information. I hope my website will be good information for you.
